Scripture Union Daily Guide 5 September 2024 Message:
Notice the invocation of the name of the Lord as the foundation upon which the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh based their response to the Israelite delegation. Are there life situations that warrant such an invocation by a Christian? What motivated the two and a half tribes to build an altar according to vs.24-25?
Fear is a strong impulse that can cause unwarranted actions, wastage of resources and negative thoughts to flourish, even if the intended goal is positive (vs.27-29). We are called to act in faith not out of fear. Nevertheless, their desire to have a lasting witness about their faith in God is instructive for us.
Phinehas and his delegation were appeased by the response of their brothers. Their fear (vs.16-20) vanished and they affirmed their relationship with God. Notice how important it was to report to the Israelites who lived in Canaan and the outcome of the report (v.33)? It is imperative that we report back on the outcome of our missionary assignments to those who sent us. Such reports form a basis of necessary and sometimes lasting decisions (v.33b)
Practice/Word Application
Thought: Our children and the generations after them ought to see our faith markers (give examples) as a lasting reminder of what God has done to their fathers.

Dear Lord, help my faith in you to leave markers as a reminder of your faithfulness to us.
